Flaggy Trails and Kurrajong Tails

Location: The Kurrajongs, Murray River Road, Thologolonga, Victoria

Time: 4pm onward 

The Kurrajongs to Flaggy Creek is an approx. 14km return trip; 8hrs+; 829m elevation; Grade 4

There is the option of a shorter hike to “Valley view” (3km return 1-3hrs; Grade 3 - panoramic views over Lake Hume and the Murray River), where you can relax and take in the beautiful views and/or continue onto “The Oaks”. If you finish early, you may like to explore the township of Walwa and surrounds.

Get ready for a weekend of adventure in one of our region’s hidden gems! We’ll be setting up a relaxed car camp at The Kurrajongs, nestled in Mount Lawson State Park, and heading out on a day walk to the scenic Flaggy Creek.

This trail offers a solid workout with a challenging, strenuous, and at times steep climb—but the effort is well rewarded. Along the way, we’ll encounter breathtaking views, peaceful forest scenery, tumbling creeks, and beautiful little waterfalls. If we’re lucky and our timing is right, orchids and wildflowers can be plentiful and magical, along with a striking display of fungi.

At the turnaround point, we’ll reach Flaggy Creek, with its series of small waterfalls and deep rock pools—a perfect spot for lunch, a break, and a few deep breaths of fresh alpine air… or even a dip in Flaggy Creek, if you’re brave enough!

Back at camp, we can put our feet up and enjoy the simple things—great company, warm meals, and the peaceful stillness of Mount Lawson State Park at night. The Kurrajong trees around the campground have loads of character, giving the area a really special feel. The campsite has the basics: a rainwater tank (unfiltered), drop toilets, and limited/non-existent phone reception—which makes it the perfect spot to really switch off and unwind.

GRADE 4 - The Kurrajongs to Flaggy Creek

Bushwalking experience recommended. Tracks may be long, rough and very steep. Directional signage may be limited.

GRADE 3 - Valley view and The Oaks

Suitable for most ages and fitness levels. Some bushwalking experience recommended. The track may have steep hill sections, a rough surface and many steps.

Car Camping - What to bring 

• In Case of Emergency ICE Form
• Water - up to 2 litres recommended for a full day's walk
• Sunscreen
• Gloves and hat
• Suitable clothing and footwear - note denim pants are uncomfortable
• Wet weather waterproofs, jacket and pants
• Down jacket
• Walking poles
• Gaiters
• Basic first aid kit, including your specific medication, e.g. asthma inhaler
• Torch or headlamp for contingencies
• Tent (sharing sections of the tent is an option)
• Sleeping Bag
• Bag Liner
• Mattress
• Pillow 
• Thermals - top and bottom
• Second layer - top and bottom
• Dry socks
• Toothbrush and paste
• Any medication (please inform leader if necessary, allergies etc)
• Personal first aid 
• Water to drink and prepare the meal ( some locations and walks have water on site or en route )
  • A leader should inform the group re: water supply
• Tablets for water ( be safe rather than get a bug) (water purification tablets )
• Dehydrated food for weight considerations
  • 3 Meals, plus snacks per day.
